What is positive behaviour support at Novita?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach that helps reduce behaviours of concern by promoting new skills and strategies. Our Novita practitioners gather information from you, your family and other supports, observing behaviours in real life and building a plan that works for everyone.

A behaviour of concern (sometimes referred to as challenging behaviour) refers to any behaviour that puts the person themselves, or others at risk of harm, limits their access to everyday activities, or impacts their quality of life.

It’s important to remember that a behaviour of concern is a form of communication and a signal that the person is trying to express an unmet need, discomfort, frustration, or difficulty.

Every plan is personalised for your strengths, needs and preferences to ensure our guidance fits easily into your daily life and meets the needs of your loved one.

Collaborative approach

The Novita PBS practitioners are skilled at working with family, services and allied health professionals for consistent and effective support that links in with other therapies already happening.

Why choose positive behaviour support with Novita?

Safer, calmer environments for everyone in your family are supported through practical strategies that work in everyday life, helping build greater independence and confidence for you or your loved one. All support is carefully tailored to a person’s unique and diverse needs, including consideration of any past experiences of trauma.

What you might be experiencing

Living with behaviours that can be unsafe, challenging or unpredictable can be stressful, isolating and exhausting. You might be experiencing:

  • Risk of injury or harm to self or others
  • Overreliance on restrictive practices, including medication, restraints or seclusion
  • Difficulty joining community activities
  • Burnout and stress in caregivers

How we support you to overcome these challenges

Novita’s positive behaviour support addresses these challenges with evidence-based strategies, tailored to the individual’s needs and strengths.

Our approach reduces a person’s need to use unsafe behaviours to have their needs met and improves quality of life for both the person and their family.

Strategies to support your goals

We aim to provide strategies and build skills so that you can feel safe in reducing restrictive practices.

Our practitioners support you and your loved one to minimise their use as soon as possible, but work alongside you to plan this together to ensure safety. We work within a restrictive practices policy at Novita.

Reassuring guidance

We focus on understanding underlying needs. Strategies are practical, respectful and safe with the goal of making sure you and your family feel supported. We will work with you at your own pace.

Fading out restrictive practices when the time is right

Restrictive practices include environmental, physical, mechanical and chemical restraints and seclusion. Sometimes families and services will need to use restrictive practices for the safety of the person involved.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long does a Positive Behaviour Support plan last?

Short term risk management plans (called Interim plans by the NDIS) are usually completed within one month. Comprehensive plans can take six months and include ongoing monitoring and review.

  • Can Positive Behaviour Support be used alongside other therapies?

Absolutely. Our team works collaboratively with your existing services, including allied health professionals, to make sure everyone is on the same page and taking a similar approach. Sometimes other therapists will be the best ones to teach skills identified by PBS as being helpful. At other times, therapists will help PBS understand your loved one’s needs because they already know them.

  • What happens if restrictive practices are currently in use?

Novita practitioners aim to reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices through safe, personalised strategies. Your plan will include guidance to phase out restrictions wherever possible.
