Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach that helps reduce behaviours of concern by promoting new skills and strategies. Our Novita practitioners gather information from you, your family and other supports, observing behaviours in real life and building a plan that works for everyone.
A behaviour of concern (sometimes referred to as challenging behaviour) refers to any behaviour that puts the person themselves, or others at risk of harm, limits their access to everyday activities, or impacts their quality of life.
It’s important to remember that a behaviour of concern is a form of communication and a signal that the person is trying to express an unmet need, discomfort, frustration, or difficulty.
Take the first step toward calmer, more meaningful everyday life with personalised PBS support.
Receive clear, actionable strategies that are easy to implement, designed to make a real difference every day.
Reduce the frequency and severity of challenging behaviours through supportive planning that takes into account the needs of the people who support them and is useful in the places they like to spend their time.
Every plan is personalised for your strengths, needs and preferences to ensure our guidance fits easily into your daily life and meets the needs of your loved one.
The Novita PBS practitioners are skilled at working with family, services and allied health professionals for consistent and effective support that links in with other therapies already happening.
Safer, calmer environments for everyone in your family are supported through practical strategies that work in everyday life, helping build greater independence and confidence for you or your loved one. We aim to provide strategies and build skills so that you can feel safe in reducing restrictive practices.
Our practitioners support you and your loved one to minimise their use as soon as possible, but work alongside you to plan this together to ensure safety. We work within a restrictive practices policy at Novita.
We focus on understanding underlying needs. Strategies are practical, respectful and safe with the goal of making sure you and your family feel supported. We will work with you at your own pace.
Restrictive practices include environmental, physical, mechanical and chemical restraints and seclusion. Sometimes families and services will need to use restrictive practices for the safety of the person involved.
Take the first step towards a better quality of life for you and your loved one.
Short term risk management plans (called Interim plans by the NDIS) are usually completed within one month. Comprehensive plans can take six months and include ongoing monitoring and review.
Absolutely. Our team works collaboratively with your existing services, including allied health professionals, to make sure everyone is on the same page and taking a similar approach. Sometimes other therapists will be the best ones to teach skills identified by PBS as being helpful. At other times, therapists will help PBS understand your loved one’s needs because they already know them.
Novita practitioners aim to reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices through safe, personalised strategies. Your plan will include guidance to phase out restrictions wherever possible.
