Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between an occupational therapist and a developmental educator?

Supports can overlap, but occupational therapists generally focus on complex equipment needs, physical support and home modifications. Developmental educators focus on functional life skills, emotional regulation, social skills and goal achievement.

  • Can I see my occupational therapist and developmental educator at the same time?

Yes. Therapists collaborate to ensure goals are complementary, not duplicated, across all areas of support.

  • What NDIS funding line does a developmental educator access?

Developmental educators use the Improved Daily Living budget. The service does not need to be listed on your plan as funding is flexible.

  • Can developmental educators assist with behaviours of concern?

Yes. Your developmental educator can support emotional regulation and behaviours of concern. If additional intervention is needed, they can assist you to access Capacity Building Behaviour Support funding.

  • Where can I access developmental education services?

Services are available across metro and regional areas, at home, school, clinic, community or pool-based environments.
